Diane is a Canadian physiotherapist with over 40 years of experience who uses nervous system-friendly manual therapy as part of a whole pain science approach to treating people with common pain ailments. She helped develop the Canadian Physiotherapy Pain Science Division in 2005, which became official in 2009. She teaches in many countries and supports awareness of neuroscience and pain science within manual therapy communities of all kinds. Her book, Dermo Neuro Modulating, was recently published.

 About DermoNeuroModulating:

Appreciation for the role of the sensory nervous system is often overlooked in our manual therapy work, yet we rely on sensory neurons to convey our therapeutic handling to our patient’s or client’s central nervous system. This presentation will review basic features of the sensory nervous system and connect the dots between what we do with our hands and what goes on in response in our clients’ nervous systems on several levels. Topics touched on include the difference between nociception and pain, non-specific effects, descending modulation, how pain might be maintained by anxiety and stress, how pain and manual treatment ties in with motor output, both voluntary and autonomic.

DermoNeuroModulating is a structured, interactive approach to manual therapy that considers the nervous system of the patient from skin cell to sense of self. Techniques are slow, light, kind, intelligent, responsive and effective. Positioning of limbs and trunk affects deeper nerve trunks (by shortening and widening their container), and is combined with skin stretch directed toward cutaneous fields of nerves that branch outward into skin (which may draw neural structure further through its container).

It is prudent to remember that manual handling of a patient’s physicality is only a small part of developing a complete therapeutic context for change—while
optional, it can also be optimal.
