Diploma in Health Sciences (Massage and Sports Therapy)

Programme Objectives

This 6 month Diploma programme extends the Diploma in Health Sciences (Therapeutic Massage) with six months of specialised study and practice. Learn to apply massage therapy specifically for sports and rehabilitation as you learn to integrate techniques and mind/body concepts.

Build on your massage knowledge with a more in-depth study of movement and function, injury prevention, health maintenance and rehabilitation of the active person. The sports massage industry in New Zealand and internationally offers many opportunities to work with active people, educating and guiding them through incorporating massage into their recovery and maintenance programmes.

Build a deeper understanding of how to work with a team or individual, with someone who exercises to keep fit or is an international competitor, in a sports setting or in your own clinic.

Massage and Sports Therapy is about working with active people who have goals while getting to know how a team or individual functions by utilising techniques to suit stages of training through a well rounded understanding rehabilitation and recovery Massage and Sports Therapy includes coverage of Pre-event, post-event and in-event massage, ensuring athletes are supported through a full complement of massage in their every day training schedules.

Key Components

Pre Requisite of NZCM Diploma in Health Sciences (Therapeutic Massage):

  • Advanced Neuromuscular therapy including mobilisation techniques
  • Myofascial release and muscle energy techniques
  • Treatment of soft tissue, musculoskeletal dysfunction, and sporting injuries
  • Rehabilitation therapy in clinical massage settings
  • Biomechanical, biochemical and psychosocial elements of clinical practice including psychology in sports performance
  • Research musculoskeletal management / rehabilitation
  • Nutrition & diet and their application to exercise and manual therapies
  • Psychiatric disorders, injury and rehabilitation
  • Indepth look and identification of Muscles, Bones and Joints
  • Musculoskeletal Anatomy – Incorporating muscle knowledge with body mechanics and movement

Massage Therapy Practicums

Students will have an opportunity to earn credits through a selection of Practicums. These are based upon Massage Therapy learning experiences and skill development and intended to reinforce in-class practical tuition. Practicums are assessed through methodologies such as:

  • Practical Massage Practicums
  • Client Information Collection
  • Case Studies
  • Student Clinic
  • Community Placements
  • Sports Placements

Practical Opportunities

NZCM students are encouraged to participate in a wide range a practical opportunities to enhance their experience base. The ability to use friends and family to practice in-class learning is essential with many practicums necessitating homebased study and massage required.

NZCM practicums are designed to help prepare students to work in real world environments such as Sport and Massage Therapy Clinics. All practicums contact refers to standard industry practices and processes in all practicums.

Key Facts (2017 is the last year in which this programme is provided)

  • 6 months full time
  • Study in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch
  • Approved for student loans for all domestic students and allowances for full time domestic students
  • 40 hours student clinic experience (Minimum)
  • Holders of the NZCM Diploma in Therapeutic Massage or equivalent will gain credit towards this qualification.
  • Community placements

Entry Criteria

  • Hold current Diploma in Therapeutic Massage or equivalent prior to June 2016
  • Be over 18 years of age with physical and mental fitness
  • Discretionary entrance available
