Programme Objectives

With this diploma, you will delve deeper into massage therapy, and learn the techniques to address injury and soft tissue dysfunction. With a focus on recovery, you will understand the importance of client assessment and developing treatment plans. This diploma can lead to many career opportunities, including: self-employment, or working alongside other professionals in a multi-health practice (e.g. physiotherapy, acupuncture, osteopathy or medical centres). Other opportunities include ski-fields, gymnasiums, cruise ships, tourism, spas, resorts, hotels, on- site corporates, rest homes and rehabilitation centres with sports teams or chronic pain sufferers.

Programme Overview

Advanced clinical massage therapy is an holistic, hands-on approach,

designed to create the conditions that support the body’s return to optimal health and vitality. With an emphasis on recovery from injury and other soft-tissue dysfunction, it lends itself to application within the broad spectrum of human physical performance activities.

The goal of NZCM’s 36-week Diploma in Advanced Clinical Massage Therapy Massage programme is to produce knowledgeable, skilled, and adaptable massage therapists capable of playing a significant role in the manual therapy industry. The programme also provides a pathway for further study to the Level 7 Bachelor of Health Studies (Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy).

  • Biomedical, behavioural, educational, and social science bases of healthcare and their role in advanced clinical massage therapy for a broad range of clients and conditions
  • Client assessment, clinical reasoning, treatment planning, implementation, and evaluation, to treat a variety of musculoskeletal and other system conditions
  • Research literacy and application of evidence-based learning to inform clinical judgements
  • Intervention strategies relevant to advanced clinical massage professional clinic management through self-responsibility, communication, client service and business development knowledge and skills integration of learning from across the programme in the form of real world clinical practice within the supervised in-house clinic and a wide range of external placement opportunities

Entry Requirements

  • Be over 18 years of age, and have a:
  • Good level of physical and mental fitness
  • 42 credits at NCEA Level 3, with 14 credits in two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Science, Biology, Health Studies, Physical Education
  • Literacy requirements - 8 credits at Level 2 (or higher)
  • 4 credits in reading and 4 credits in writing
  • Discretionary admission is available
