New Zealand Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage (Level 5)

Enrolments being accepted for July intake now!

Programme Objectives –

Take that vital step towards your career in massage. Health and wellness involves physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, occupational, and social health.  Several New Zealand Ministry of Health studies have indicated the poor state of adult health and wellbeing in New Zealand. Thus, the goal of the NZCM is to produce knowledgeable, skilled, adaptable massage therapists who recognise their role within the wider healthcare community and contribute to improving health outcomes. The Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage provides the required skills and knowledge. It also provides a pathway for further study, in particular to the Level 6 New Zealand Diploma in Remedial Massage (which will become available in 2018) and the NZCM Level  7 Degree programme.

The Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage is a 36-week programme that gives you the understanding, skills and attributes of a successful wellness and relaxation massage therapist – human function, health and wellness, massage skills, and professional practice.

The programme comprises 36 weeks of tuition and is structured to ensure incremental, accumulative and integrated development. Term one begins with study at Level 4 to provide a pathway to the Level 5 coursework later in the programme and preparation for further study at Level 6. Your learning will be reinforced within each course and with crossover between courses; for example, surface anatomy learning in Musculoskeletal Anatomy is coordinated with the muscle specific hands-on skills developed in the Fundamentals of Massage. Integration of learning takes place through the year-long Professional Practice course that is designed to provide a workplace experience where all learning comes together.

Knowledge and understanding is taught through problem-framing and problem-solving activities such as in-class peer group work. You will develop practical skills through demonstrations and experientially in supervised practical classes. You will develop the interpersonal skills required in clinical practices. Our teaching clinic offers supervised practice in which you will take on increasing responsibility in relation to your developing skills. Your development of professional responsibility is further supported by external placements. We want you to make your own meaning of the learning experiences within the scope of practice of wellness and relaxation massage.

Your practical work will be assessed practically and your clinical work assessed in a clinical context and understanding demonstrated through critical, reflective writing, and verbally, as when explaining a condition or treatment to a client or another health professional. Assessments are designed to measure your achievement and to be part of the learning process through comprehensive feedback.

The Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage will provide many career opportunities including: self-employment, working alongside other professionals in a multi-health practice (e.g. physiotherapy, acupuncture, osteopathy or medical centres). Other opportunities include ski-fields, gymnasiums, cruise ships, tourism, spas, resorts, hotels, on-site corporate, rest homes and rehabilitation centres.
